Pine Bush Origins

Last week I mentioned the Pine Bush UFO Fair that is coming up in a couple months.  I am looking forward to attending because I have never been to one of these events and it is somewhat local so I do not have to jump on a plane and rent a hotel room.  I plan to speak with the people involved in the fair and find out what their story is.  Everyone has a story and I like stories.

In the meantime, I am going to find out as much as I can about Pine Bush.  Apart from being a cute little town, what is so special about Pine Bush?  I took a look at the Pine Bush UFO website.  I clicked to activate Flash.  They should really get rid of that.  Nobody uses Flash anymore.  The technology choice is indicative of the mysterious approach to the "UFO Phenomenon."  A lot of people want to lump UFOs in with the Paranormal and put the subject in the same category as The Loch Ness Monster.  If you are only trying to appeal to people who believe in fairy tails then fine, mission accomplished.  Nothing against those folks.  But for someone like me who has more of a scientific mind it is a huge turn off.  I know UFOs are real because I have seen an alien spaceship, up close, with my own eyes.  Mystery solved.  But that is just me.  Right?  No?

Anyway, these guys have a fair to run and they are trying to attract attendees.  Good, let us dig in.  Right below the Flash movie at the top of the home page there is a link to report a UFO and a phone number for a UFO Hotline.  It is open 24/7.  I have a UFO Hotline at 401-315-9102 but I only answer it between 6am and 7am Eastern US time because I have other things to do.  Tempting... tempting...  OK, I am calling it.

It is 6:40am on Monday, March 11, 2019.  The phone rang four times before voicemail picked up, thanking me for calling the NY/NJ UFO Hotline.  I was encouraged to leave a message and someone would get back to me.  If it was a UFO Emergency I could hang up and text a message to the same number and someone would get back to me.  No thanks.  Just curious.

*** Update *** I called back around 9:45am and was greeted by Vinny Polise, like The Cops but with an S.  Vinny also has other things to do which is why he did not answer my call earlier in the day.  Right on.  Vinny seems like a nice guy.  He was very accommodating with my questions.  He said the hotline gets a little slow in the winter because not as many people are outside, looking up at the sky, but in the summer things heat up.  We talked for about half an hour and agreed to talk some more, later this week.  I want to find out more about him and his involvement with Pine Bush and will write about what I uncover.  In short, Vinny got involved with the town after reading Ellen Crystall's book, Silent Invasion.  Pine Bush is a hotbed of UFO activity and [clear's throat] paranormal activity.  To be continued...

A bit lower on the home page there is a link for a YouTube Live page.  Fun!  Let's see a UFO.  I watched several of the videos.  They are interesting and there may be something there.  But there may not be.  None of the videos actually capture something like what I saw, which was a full-on alien spaceship.  These are all videos of strange lights in the sky.  I can appreciate that and certainly some of the strange lights were hard to explain.  Most, however, moved in straight lines or gentle arcs at about the same speed which indicates they were probably airplanes.  Many of those had flashing safety lights.  The spaceship I saw had bright lights in front of it (maybe headlights?) but no flashing lights.  And why would it?  Safety lights would not help, flying through deep space.  That is an Earth thing.  One video caught my eye, though.  In the image above you can see two funky dots.  They crossed paths, flying at very different trajectories.  It is possible they were both flying on planned flight paths but this one is more difficult to explain away.  Cue Twilight Zone music.

I could get lost on YouTube all day which is why I avoid it, in general.  Today, these videos do not tell me anything about Pine Bush.  Moving on.  Further down the page there is a link to the Pine Bush UFO Facebook page.  I clicked Like and now I am following it.  More fun videos.  Links to Big Foot sightings and "mysterious stones."  That would be a good name for a band, The Mysterious Stones.  Speaking of bands, there is a link to Blue Alien Mystic.  Hey, I know that guy!  There is a notice about a Linda Zimmerman talk tonight.  She seems to be a regular in these circles.  I met her last fall.  Nice woman.  I should sit down with her and have more of an in-depth conversation.  Still nothing on what happened in Pine Bush, on the FB page.

Here is something noteworthy.  There is a link to a United Friends Observer Society Support Group, or UFOssg for short.  There are monthly meetings.  I have to check this out.  I think this is what the person at the UFO Conference was talking about when she mentioned Pine Bush.  Looks like I just missed one.  I will try to attend the April meeting.  I am picturing something like an AA meeting where I will have to stand up and say, "Hi, I'm David," and everyone says, "Hi David," and I say, "I'm a UFO witness," and then I am welcomed and encouraged and then I tell my story.  At the end they tell me to keep coming back because dammit, I am worth it.  I am sure it is nothing like that.  But I am burning up inside, to find out.  Wednesday April 3 from 6-9pm.  It is on the calendar.  This should be fun.

Still nothing about the "Pine Bush Phenomenon."  I guess you are just supposed to know what it is all about before going to the website.  A Google search showed nothing on the first page.  Even the Wikipedia entry on PB (not to be confused with Pacific Beach) barely mentions UFOs.  I will not quote the Urban Dictionary entries on the town name but they are funny.  Five pages deep on Google and still nothing.

I searched "Pine Bush UFO" and finally, halfway down the results page, I got an answer.  Weird US has an article about what happened.  The article does not list any sources but goes into detail about why the town calls itself the UFO Capital of the World (others call it the UFO Capital of the East).  Following a string of Boomerang-shaped UFO sightings further south in Westchester County in the 1980's people in Pine Bush began talking about a number of sightings in their town.  This included alien abductions and other encounters.  Within a few years the town began attracting UFO watchers.  This grew to the extent that the police had to put an end to it, to keep people from wandering onto private property and disturbing local residents.

So that is where it started but it is not where it ends.  I will go to Pine Bush and check things out for myself.  Stay tuned for more info.

What is Pine Bush?

This may surprise many of my readers but I am new to the UFO Culture.  The subject of UFOs has interested me ever since my sighting but I never thought to join any movements or follow anyone who researched the subject.  It was only after speaking with Lue Elizondo and a documentary maker, last summer, that I thought I should start blogging about my experience and my thoughts on the subject.  This then led me to exploring this whole world UFO aficionados and paranomalists.

What is Pine Bush?
Downtown Pine Bush
I mention all this as a prelude to today's post about Pine Bush.  Until last week the only thing I knew about Pine Bush was that it is a town in southern Putnam County, NY.  I remember the name coming up at the "UFO Conference" I went to in Danbury last October.  I wrote it down but never pursued it.  Last week I posted a link on Facebook to the McMenamins UFOfest in Oregon and a friend replied that I should check out the Pine Bush Festival.  And I did.

Pine Bush is actually in Orange County, just over the Hudson River, an hour and fifteen minutes from me.  On the surface, it is a cute small town which appears similar to any other small town in the lower part of New York State.  The streets are clean and the homes well-maintained.  Its schools play a large role in people's lives.  Stats on the population show it is a homogeneous white community but looking at the school's website there would appear to be a fair amount of diversity (the schools take in several surrounding towns) and concerted efforts by the school administration to ensure everyone is accepted and respected.

 UFO Culture

Beneath the surface, Pine Bush is the site of a spree of UFO sightings in the mid-1980's which earned it the self-proclaimed title of "The UFO Capital of the World."  I'm sure Roswell, McMenamins, and other towns would say, "Them's fighting words," but I will leave the valuation to the people of each of those towns.  Because of this designation, the town of Pine Bush has held a UFO Festival for the past eight years.  This is great, I thought.  Since reading about the McMenamins festival I have aspired to go deeper down the rabbit hole and attend one of these events.  It happens that the two festivals are on the same day.  Which to choose?  Not a hard choice.  One is in Oregon, the other is a fun motorcycle ride away.  Pine Bush wins.

UFO Culture
I reached out to the organizers of the event to find out more about it and see if this might be a good place for me to get my story out to the public.  Since the event is only two months away, the speakers list is already full.  But they are going to put me on a list of speakers for the town's museum and may call me in sometime over the summer.  A speaking engagement!  Awesome!  OK, nothing is booked yet but still, it's exciting.

In the meantime, I am going to check out the festival.  I started with the PineBushUFO website.  It is geared towards the stereotypical "UFO Geek" with an X Files type of feel, complete with a hokey Flash animation and mysterious sound effects.  It would have been a cool site in the late 90's - ish.  Suppressing my gag reflex, I marched past the "Under Construction" warning and ventured into the website.  I found the site to be disorganized and cluttered.  It will take me a while to digest all the info and pull out something usable for this blog.  But that I will.

Next week I will publish more details about the upcoming festival and why it occurs there.  Have a great weekend!

Dragon Battle

While I was away SpaceX reached a new milestone, launching their new Space Taxi version of the "Dragon" rocket module.  This puts the US back in the business of transporting humans into space, reducing our reliance on Russia to get people to and from the Space Station.  Good news!  Nothing against using Russian rockets.  I am sure the Russians love their astronauts too (thank you Sting).  But when it comes to launching people into space, I have more confidence in using spaceships marked with "Made in the U.S.A." on them.

Meanwhile, in China...  Not to be outdone, the Chinese announced this week that they too have a "Dragon" rocket, ready to launch people and cargo into space.  Did anyone think to Copyright or Trademark "Dragon Rocket?"  Not that copyrights and trade marks mean anything over in China.  But I digress.

Bugs Bunny Silly Isn't He?
America's Dragon has the Demo-2, China's has the Long March 5-B.  America's has seating for four (up to seven) and China's has seating for six (up to seven).  They both have two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, and onions.  But America's Dragon has a sesame seed bun, China's has sesame chicken.

At any rate, we are about to enter a new era in space travel.  Competition breeds innovation so now with SpaceX, (and let's not forget Boeing), and China competing for passengers and cargo, the next few years should be the most exciting in space travel development since JFK announced we were going to the moon.  Even Russia will have to step up its game and replace its Soviet-Era spaceships once everyone starts riding on the US and Chinese ships.

I do have to wonder, though, if China really has any edge on its competition.  Every time something electronic fails in my house I flip it over and invariably it says, "Made in China."  Even with China violating every international patent law and spying on our government to steal secrets, I do not have a lot of faith in Chinese-made anything.  I do not think I would ever buy a Chinese car, let alone a plane ticket on a Chinese spaceship.  Nothing against the Chinese people, just their cheapo products.

The biggest question I have, though, is who will be the first to provide definitive proof of alien life?  The windows on those modules do not look very big.  Do they have cameras outside?  Why does it seem like all space missions are focused entirely on what is happening inside the transporters and the Space Station instead of what is going on outside?  Hopefully the new competition will spur engineers to rethink things and become more outwardly focused.

I am Back

It has been nearly three weeks since my last post.  In that time I had surgery to remove a cancerous tumor in my colon.  The surgery went well and I caught it early enough that it had not yet spread to other organs which would have then necessitated chemo or radiation treatments.  That is fine with me.  So it could have been better - no cancer would be my preference, but if you have to get cancer, getting it all removed with one surgery is not the worst way to go.

I had a lot of visitors in the hospital.  It was mostly family but I also saw a few close friends including a buddy of mine who beat leukemia about fifteen years ago.  He gave me a book he read.  It takes a lot of thought and consideration to give someone a book you read, expecting the recipient will get what you got out of it.  All in all the hospital stay was not that bad, especially once I stopped taking the opiates they prescribed me.  I do not know how people become addicted to those things.  They are awful.

Five days after the surgery I was released and have since been recovering at home.  The first week, there was a lot of pain.  Just sitting still, I could feel what had been done unless I was on strong pain relievers.  Coughing hurt - a lot.  A sneeze was excruciating.  I tried not to sneeze.  I tried not to shake hands so I would not catch anything from anyone which might make me sneeze.

I would rather be snowboarding
My friends and community have provided tremendous support for me and my family.  One friend set up a meal train so Mrs. M and I do not have to cook dinner for a few weeks.  That has helped a lot.  Another friend just set up a GoFundMe for us.  Hopefully that will offset some lost income, which is substantial.  I am trying not to think about that.

Convalescing at home would be great if I was the type of person who can relax.  I am not.  I have probably done twenty loads of laundry in the past week.  There is still more to do.  I have found folding shirts to be unbelievably satisfying.  I refolded all of my clothes.  By the end of this week the whole house should be in shape.  Maybe then I can sit in a chair and look out the window for a few minutes.  That would be nice.

House work has been good for getting me moving.  I will start going to the gym this week and doing some lite exercise.  The doctor said I could ski a month after the surgery - no double diamonds, just some greens, but that is my goal.  I want to exercise my season pass again before the season is over.

I plan to resume my daily blogs about aliens, UFO's, and space this week.  It is hard to wake up, these days.  The doctor said that would happen.  I used to get up at four or five in the morning to do this blog.  I do not use an alarm.  I just wake up when I have had enough sleep, and start writing.  But my body is telling me it needs more sleep to recover from being hacked apart and it has been keeping me out cold until anywhere from seven to nine in the morning.  Today I woke up at six.  Time to start writing again.

Most likely I will start back up with a review of current events related to space or aliens.  I am also open to suggestions on what people want to hear about.  Feel free to reach out.

Thank you to all my readers who continued to check the blog, even though I have not posted anything new in a while.  I can see the traffic to this site has not dropped nearly to the extent I had anticipated.  It is good to know people are thinking about me.  See you tomorrow!
