UFO bells ring, are you listening?

Winter is just about here in the Northeastern United States.  December has been cold, with temperatures in the twenties and thirties.  We had a dusting of snow, yesterday, in Connecticut - not much in the way of accumulation, you can still see the dead leaves poking through, but enough white on the ground to say, "Wear a coat," to the kids.

We should get a lot more precipitation over the weekend but it will warm up enough for it to probably come down as rain.  Still, a Nor'easter could blow through anytime and dump a couple feet of snow on us.  Whenever that happens, I think about aliens.  Also, whenever it does not snow I think about aliens.

Alien Sneak Attack
Alien Sneak Attack

Would a blinding blizzard be a good time for aliens to visit, or a bad time?  It would depend on their intentions and their capabilities.

I will start with capabilities.  We can assume that anyone with the ability to create an aircraft, capable of high-altitude flight, probably has access to radar and similar / related technology which aid flight.  This would help alien spaceships in navigating through a snowstorm.  If we have computer-aided auto-pilot, they must too.  It is highly unlikely that we have thought of any technology that they do not already have.  So we will include all of it.

What else do they have?  It is hard to imagine that which we have not yet invented but surely anyone who can get from there to here must have the ability to get through a blizzard, automatically adjusting for wind shears gusting up to hurricane strength, and dumping snow, with ease.  They were able to get from another solar system at the speed of light (or faster) without being torn apart by tiny bits of space flotsam, so they should be able to navigate a blizzard.  But would they want to?

What benefit would there be to taking on the added risk of flying through a terrible storm?  What would they do once they landed, if they landed?  They would not be able to see much.  Visibility in a Nor'easter can drop well under a quarter mile.  X-Rays and other technology we do not yet have would help.  Maybe they even have eyes which can see things we cannot, like other rays on the light spectrum.  Maybe they see in infrared.  We do not know.  But it is possible, whether through evolution, advanced technology, or even bio-engineering, seeing through a blinding snow storm is no problem for a race of people with a million+ year head start on us.

The Extra Space Ship

If they could navigate and if they could see, would they want to get out of their ships?  I would not.  I am a reasonable person.  It is likely that aliens are too - if not, they would have killed each other off by now, right?  I will sometimes get in my Extra Space Ship and go out in a blizzard if I already happen to be away from home and need to get home.  I will go out if my wife is driving home in a storm and needs help or if a friend loses power and needs shelter until power is restored.  I probably would not go out for bread and milk, not that there would be any on the shelves.  I will also get out of the car if I need to clean off my windshield or if someone needs help.  Otherwise, I will stay inside the car with the heat blasting against the windshield.

Extra Space Ship
The Extra Space Ship

Having grown up in the Northeast, there are many times I went out in a snow storm to visit friends or just get out of the house.  We did not think it was a big deal, back in the 1980's.  It seems different today, though.  Schools shut down when the Weatherman even hints at a few inches of snow.  Have we evolved in our thinking and become more risk-averse over the past few decades?  If so, would aliens also have a much lower tolerance for risk?

I believe that, like humans, aliens would have the ability to get out of their ships and walk around, they just would not want to unless they absolutely had to.  So what might cause that?

Alien Sneak Attack

If an alien civilization wanted to make first contact, it would make sense to do it on a nice sunny day, at least for our sake if not for their own.  So rolling up in a snow storm would not be a good sign.  It would likely indicate an attack.  During a Nor'easter, transportation can grind to a halt.  Highways are closed.  Planes are grounded.  We can become house-bound.  Aliens?  Not so much.  This would be an ideal time to attack.

We do this, ourselves.  Before deploying ground troops, the US military will take out bridges and other infrastructure, from the air, to reduce the mobility of our adversaries.  In the Six Day War, Israel got wind of a planned sneak attack against them so they directed their pilots to destroy Arab-State planes while they sat on the runways, nullifying the Arab advantage.  During World War II, the Japanese destroyed nearly the entire US Pacific Fleet while it was docked in Pearl Harbor, drastically setting back our ability to counter-attack.  It is what you do ahead of an attack.

If you had the ability to fly through a blinding snow storm with hurricane-force winds, with ease, you would not even need to disable your adversary's infrastructure or their mobility options.  Mother Nature would have already done it for you.  You would then be free to wreak havoc on the other side.  If you wanted to ensure the other side did not dig out a couple days later and counter-attack, you could seek out any target you wanted and advance upon it, unimpeded.

I wonder if our military leaders have considered this.  Are they prepared for an alien sneak attack during a crippling snow storm?

Update on the podcast

I completed my second interview of a Sighting Witness yesterday.  The session went really well.  We discussed two sightings the Witness observed, both in the Mt. Kisco, New York area.  We also talked about his experience "meeting" an alien in a meditative state and about his thoughts on other phenomena.  It was a fun and interesting discussion.

I am looking forward to getting it up on the web.  The only thing stopping me right now is I need to get some good editing software so I can add in some additional content and make the shows a half hour or less.  My guest suggested Audacity.  I will have to check it out.

At any rate, with two interviews now under my belt, and nearly three months of blog posts (thanks for reading), I feel like I now have enough content to move forward with Phase II which is to start pushing out weekly podcast shows.  Stay tuned for an announcement on its premier.  Like with any new initiative, I have some reluctance to move forward.  The first step is always the hardest.  There will be a lot to learn in putting together the first show.  I will then have to work the process into my routine, which is already a lot of work.

Right now, the schedule is I get up between 4:00 or 5:00 in the morning and try to get a blog post published and announced on social media by 7:00.  This then gives me time to get ready for work and get the kids on the bus.  At 8:00 I start working on my staffing company in Plattsburgh for at least an hour.  Depending on what day it is I then either teach business courses at a college or I work on local staffing in Connecticut.  After work I try to spend some time with the kids.  I am also working on a pilot for a TV show, with a writing partner, a couple days a week.

The Marceau Ship

Podcast?  I will work it in somewhere.  There is always more time; only energy and ambition have limits.  Time goes on forever.  Energy comes from coffee - I have lots of coffee and I use it.  Ambition comes from the heart.  I have become very dedicated to this project.  We are being visited by aircraft from other planets.  I know that for a fact because I saw the ship depicted in the image at the right, up close.  I do not know if anyone is piloting them but others say they do know for sure and I want to speak with them and get their stories out there.

People need to know about this and it is time to start presenting it for what it is.  It is real and it is happening.  Are all the stories true?  I do not know.  That is not for me to judge.  I just want to get the word out there.  If enough observations are documented, over time we should see some commonality in the stories.  The truth will surface.

Fermi Fun

This week I am working on a follow up to yesterday's post regarding Earth's Violence Credit Score with aliens.  It is going to take quite a bit of research.  I have to interlace this research with managing a small business and teaching five college courses.  It is Finals Week so I will have more time to do this research next week and I hope to show some of my results after the holidays.

In the meantime, I thought I would treat my readers to a fun video which helps explain something I am devoting a lot of time to, fun with The Fermi Paradox.  I will note that I dismiss a major reason for the Fermi Paradox which is that aliens do not exist.  I have seen a spaceship up close.  With that out of the way I can focus more on why aliens are hiding from us, which I call (in all humility, word) The Marceau Paradox.

Enjoy:

Potential

Why will aliens not just come down and introduce themselves?  It is a question I ask often.  Most of my answers (and I still have many possibilities to explore) center around us, the humans, not them.  You know the old break-up line, "It's not you, it's me?"  Ya, it is not them, it is us.  There is something about us they do not like or trust.  But what?

A few weeks ago I wrote an article suggesting that it could be that we are too violent.  But really, we are good people (for humans).  Most of us do not want to hurt anyone.  Even if attacked, a lot of people would sooner crouch in the fetal position than hit another person.  So is it really that we are too violent?  Or could it be more that we have the potential for violence - we have the potential and the means to carry it out.

Violence Credit Score

Pondering this, I am reminded of the Personal Financial Management class I am currently teaching.  In the class, we spent a lot of time on how and why you can qualify for credit.  It is obvious that you can be denied credit because of things you did like skipping a payment, maxing out your cards, or carrying a balance.  Any of these attributes will lower your credit score and make future creditors think twice about giving you additional credit.  If they do agree to extend you credit, they may put you into a pool of people with the same bad habits.  They will then charge you all a higher interest rate under the assumption that statistically a certain percentage of you will default and stop paying your debt.  The higher interest rate will make up for the folks who stop making payments.  See, you learned something today on that UFO guy's blog.

There are other reasons you can be denied credit which have nothing to do with what you have done in the past but more about what you could do in the future.  One is, to have too much available credit.  That is, you could be making your payments on time, only using a small fraction of your available credit, and paying your full balance every month.  But if you have, let us say, ten credit cards, each with a credit limit of $25,000 and you only make $50,000 a year (ignore how that is even possible, for this extreme example) you then have the potential of running up a quarter million dollars in debt, over night, and not having the means to pay for it.

This scares future creditors.  They think that if they give you the credit you seek that you may have difficulty paying them back because of your total debt potential.  So they will either deny you credit or they will put you in a pool of people with similar debt potential and charge you all a higher interest rate.

Bringing this line of thinking back to alien contact, perhaps instead of a credit score, aliens have given Earth a Violence Credit Score.  Stay with me.  We lose points for having wars with each other.  We lose more points for violent crime.  We lose a few points for petty crime, but nothing significant.  We lose points for literally using the Nuclear Option and nuking each other.  We lose points for breaking peace treaties.  Just with these reasons alone, our violence "credit score" on Earth is pretty bad.

Human Potential for Violence

The bigger reason for being denied alien contact, though, may just be in the human potential for violence.  The largest military powers could annihilate every person on the planet and still have weapons and ammunition left over.  What if we turned these weapons on our interstellar visitors?  Certainly, if they could get from there to here, they would  have superior weapons capabilities.  But that would not stop us from taking out as many of them as we could, in the process.

Just because aliens have superior weapons does not mean they would use them.  A lot of Second Amendment proponents say they would never want to use a fire arm against someone - they just carry one, "just in case."  Aliens may not even want to carry their weapons through space with them.  Or maybe there is an interstellar law that they cannot.  We cannot carry guns or even knives on airplanes.  Perhaps aliens are not allowed to carry their photon ray blasters on board their space ships.  It is possible.

Either way, if aliens wanted to pick a fight with humans, they would end up taking some casualties.  If we decided to use our violence potential against our alien visitors it would be a blood bath.  In the end they would wipe us off the face of the planet but we would take a lot of them with us.  That is what we do, right?  We do not go down without a fight.  Hoo-wah!

Why would any alien race want to risk their lives, making friends with people who act like that?  I would not.  If my new neighbor said, "You can come on over for a barbecue but if you say anything I don't like I'm gonna shoot you," I would politely decline his invitation.  It may not be our militaries that scare off the aliens.  It might just be you and me.

Violence Credit Score
Welcome, aliens!

We have a lot of guns.  Here in America there are 120 guns per 100 civilians.  There are nearly 400 million people here.  That is a lot of guns!  We are not alone, though.  The total number of civilian guns in the world is approaching one billion.  Humans have the potential to barricade themselves in their homes and take out billions of alien visitors (not that that many would ever actually come here at once).  That alone is enough to wreck our violence score and cause aliens to deny us contact.

Again, let us bring it home - my new neighbor asks me over for a barbecue but tells me, "We don't want to hurt you, but the whole family is gonna be packing heat, with the safeties off.  Even little Ruby Sue has one that matches her romper."  Thanks for the invite but I have other plans.

  • Plan #1: Stay away from people with the potential to kill me.
  • Plan #2: Stand in the window, behind the curtains with binoculars and keep an eye on those yokels.

Note, this is not a Second Amendment rant.  I will leave that debate to others who have stronger views, for and against, than I do.  I do not have a dog in this fight.  Really, I do not care so do not try to argue with me on it.  My point is just to show that humans have great potential to inflict harm on alien visitors.  That is undeniable.  We may not want to hurt anyone but just like when you have the potential to run up too much debt by having too much available credit, the people of Earth have the potential to run up too many casualties against aliens by having too much available fire power.

If I were them I would keep my distance too.  I would stand in my spaceship behind a curtain of clouds, with binoculars and keep an eye on these people.

Rorschach Cloud

I took the picture below, driving along the Au Sable River, on the way to Lake Placid, this past Saturday.  Take a good look at it.  It is beautiful, right?  What do you see?

Rorschach Cloud
Rorschach Cloud

I see the mountain range.  I do not live in the mountains so that is something unusual, that would stick out to me.  I love mountains.

I then notice what a bright, beautiful, sunny day it is.  No cloud cover to block out the sunlight.  You do not get many days like that in the Northeast.  Four out of five days have some level of overcast conditions where I live.  It is a nice treat when it is that sunny.

I see the snow.  I see the trees.  I see a road with no other travelers.  I see a little house which must have an amazing view of the river at the bottom of the valley and the mountains beyond it.  I see the sun.

I also see a lone cloud - a lone cloud on an otherwise cloudless day.  It appeared to be over the town of Au Sable Forks.  It is flat-ish, kind of saucer-shaped.  One might say it somewhat resembles... oh I don't know... a... UFO?

Aliens and Nukes

Yup, it looks like a UFO.  It is sitting there all by itself.  Why is that one cloud there?  And it is huge!  Against the wide-open blue sky and long mountain range it looks tiny.  But depending on where exactly it is, in relation to the other features in the image, it could be anywhere from a mile to several miles long.  If it was a UFO, that would be one enormous UFO.

Could it be that a UFO was hovering over the Adirondacks, checking us out?  It is out in the middle of nowhere.  The spaceship that I saw was in a forest in the middle of nowhere.  But it was also on a huge military base during a dual-nation training exercise.  There was a lot to observe.  I was guarding a large ammunition dump when it glided by me.  It is reasonable that aliens would want to see what our capabilities are by checking out a big pile of ordinance.  But the Adirondacks?  There are no military bases up there.  The closest active-duty base to the location of the picture is Fort Drum, nearly three hours west.  There is nothing to see here, folks.

Aliens and Nukes

Or is there?  Until 1995 there was an Air Force base a half hour north in Plattsburgh.  That was a Strategic Air Command base.  SAC bases were responsible for major parts of the US's nuclear arsenal.  I remember, as a kid growing up near Plattsburgh, watching B-52's come in for a landing.  The air strip was just past the mall.  If we heard one coming we would try to get into the mall or our car as quickly as we could because the screech of the engines was deafening.  If you got caught out in the parking lot under one of those things you would have to plug your ears or they would ring for hours.

Abandoned Missile Silos and UFOs
Abandoned Missile Silos and UFOs

The image above from http://www.atlasmissilesilo.com shows locations of nuclear missile silos all around Plattsburgh.  This includes (drum-roll, please) one right under the spot the cloud, above, was viewed.  Could the cloud have been concealing an aircraft which was checking out the old abandoned launch site?

I took the picture, thinking it was cool that the cloud looked like a UFO but not actually thinking it really was a UFO.  I was prepared to write a blog article about how these clouds are formed by nature and can be explained and dismissed as a natural phenomenon.  Indeed, there are web pages devoted to these Lenticular Clouds that look like UFO's.

The clouds are formed near mountains by swirling breezes blowing down the mountains.  The wind and temperature conditions have to be just right but it is not that uncommon for these kinds of clouds to form on their own.  Still...

What do you think?  The picture I took, at the top of the page - Cloud or UFO?  Post comments below or on the David Marceau Facebook Page.

Apollo Wha???

One of the reasons I stay off of YouTube is the comments.  One of the reasons to go on YouTube is the comments.

Apollo 20 Hoax

A friend of mine sent me a link to a story on the "Apollo 20" Mission.  Anything related to aliens, I have to check out.  I want to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, if they have a first-hand account of a sighting.  Who am I to tell someone they are wrong if they believe what they saw was a real alien sighting?  But when people report second or third-hand accounts and start off with things like, "... what the government won't tell you," or, "the mainstream media won't show this..."  I am going into it with serious doubt.

Are there things the government will not tell us?  Probably.  The question is, why?  When the government keeps secrets it is typically for national security reasons.  What national security reason would the US government have for not telling the world about the greatest discovery of all time?

Are there things that the "mainstream media" does not report?  Sure!  It is called "fake news."  The mainstream media is in the business of seeking out the truth and informing people.  They value their credibility and would not want to do anything to jeopardize that.  Are they wrong sometimes?  You betcha.  But then they print or air a retraction, correcting the mistake and apologize for it.

Alien Autopsy Scam
Alien Autopsy Scam

Nonetheless, I had to check out this Apollo 20 story.  The first thing that comes up when you Google it is a Wikipedia article about the Apollo 20 Hoax.  Not a good start.  Some people doubt the veracity of Wikipedia.  People also doubt the veracity of the Earth being round.  Wikipedia, for all its faults, is a one-of good source - in other words, it is a good idea to verify what you have read on Wikipedia by looking up other sources but all in all it is a reasonable place to start.

The summary of the story is that despite the fact that Apollo missions 18, 19, & 20 were scrapped, conspiracy theorists want to believe that for some reason these missions were instead secretized.  Astronauts then went up to the moon and shot shaky, amateur video footage of an alien city on the Dark Side of the Moon and brought a well-preserved alien corpse onto the lunar module and performed medical experiments on her.  Sounds legit.

Moon City  Faked

Next, I decided to watch the actual Apollo 20 YouTube video which sparked the story, so I could see what it was all about for myself.  I immediately noticed a lot of oddities with the purported footage.  It looks like an other-worldly city is being filmed from inside a space capsule window.  I have shot video like this from inside a house or a car.  Two things:

Moon City Faked
Moon City Faked

1. The image outside seems to move across the screen instead of the camera moving around in front of the window.
2. It is very difficult to shoot something dark, outside, from inside a lighted space.

Picture of dark exterior from light interior
Picture of dark exterior from light interior
For example, I am sitting in my office at about 6:00am, in this image.  Notice the glare from the lamp on the left.  It causes a reflection on the window which shows my recliner and my Basic Training Platoon photo and Microsoft Partner plaque hanging on the opposite wall of the office.  As for the scenery outside, you can see what is in the immediate foreground because it is being lit up from the light inside, through a large picture window.  Everything beyond about ten yards is too dark to make out.  The only reason you can see what you can, instead of a reflection, is because I am standing in front of the window, blocking some of the light.

Apollo 20 Hoax
Apollo 20 Hoax

Later in the YouTube video there are some fly-by's of the moon, again shot from inside the capsule window.  I am not going to take the time to determine whether this is real or not because there is plenty of real moon fly-by video available on the Internet.  If someone wanted to make a video look real they could simply insert any moon fly-by to enhance the veracity of the fake parts.  That being said, the fly-by's in this video look like the moon is made of plastic.  If you compare it to most other moon fly-by video, it is too smooth and "clean."

Alien Autopsy Scam

The real fun part, though, is the dead alien woman that the astronauts (who apparently are also medical doctors who chose to become pilots instead of pursuing lucrative careers practicing medicine, after eight years of medical school) decide to examine aboard their tiny spacecraft.  Good thing they thought ahead and brought their lab coats and alien autopsy gear with them!

Astronaut in lab coat
Astronaut in lab coat

You never know when you might come across a perfectly preserved corpse from another planet on a desolate space rock, right?  But then, where are the Doctor-pilot's gloves and surgical mask?  Notice we never get a good look at the Flying Surgeon's face?  It would have been a good idea to obscure it with a surgical mask instead of just making it blurry.

Speaking of blurry, notice in the image of the Space Doctor, outside the window of the capsule everything is blurry and white.  The camera later zooms in on the moon's surface and temporarily goes black and out of focus and then goes white and back in focus again.  Are we really supposed to believe that auto-focus, auto-exposure video cameras were aboard the Apollo flights?  Well, I looked it up.  We are a couple years early.  Auto-focus cameras first hit the market a year after the Apollo 20 mission supposedly took place.  As for the exposure, there were indeed some auto-aperture lenses as far back as the 1950's but the type of quality exhibited in this video did not come onto the scene until the late 1980's and was not really perfected until well into the 1990's.

Mid century use of late century tech
Mid century use of late century tech

I could go on, picking apart the video, and truly it has been fun.  But it is more fun to read the comments on the video.  YouTube user, "Mrmarty G" says, "They forgot that they were suposed [sic] to be in a weightless environment.   So when he drops the peice [sic] of skin etc from the the tweezers it didn't fly upwards but gently stuck to her face."  I know, right?

These are a lot of people who post comments expressing their belief and bashing the skeptics.
SMH :)
There are interesting times.

Here is the full video of the Apollo 20 Hoax, for your viewing pleasure:

Is UFOlogy science?

Yesterday and last week I hinted that perhaps the gap in the origins of man could be explained by modern humans having been planted here by aliens.  It is possible.  I have been doing a lot of research since then on human evolution.  There is a lot there.  But I am determined to find some facts which could support my idea - or which refute it, in which case I will announce that.

Is UFOlogy Science?

My previous posts have attempted to do the same, to use a scientific approach to support philosophical notions.  Is that science?  An Academic with a PhD might say no.  Scientific American says Ufology is pseudoscience.  (A claim which itself sounds like pseudoscience.)  But what I am doing seems like science to me.  So I Googled the term.  Science is defined as, "the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment."  That sounds like what I am doing.

I do not believe for a second that I am a scientist - more of a philosopher.  But I do want to stick with a scientific approach.  Any idiot can write about his thoughts.  Can you back it up with precedent, some type of evidence?  Or, in lack of evidence, is there a completely logical explanation, based on a solid understanding of how things work.

Within the UFO Community there are many folks who believe in aliens, not because of any experiences with aliens or because of any scientific reasoning, but simply because they believe in the Supernatural and the Paranormal.  Many UFO adherents believe in ghosts, demons, mental telepathy, Big Foot, Nessie.  I have nothing against those folks and I welcome them and their opinions.  Maybe all of their beliefs are true.  There is no way I could know.  What I do know is I have seen no evidence to link any of those beliefs to the existence of life on other planets.

The UFO Community
Bigfoot riding Nessie
Does life exist on other planets?  Of course it does.  I have seen an alien spaceship, up close, and I have a corroborating witness.  It is irrefutable.  Is there a ghost in my house?  That is another subject.  Regardless, I am going to stick with a scientific approach to my writing.

UFOs and Scientific Method

So what does that mean?  When I come up with an idea, say that aliens know we are here and they are hiding from us because aliens want to contain us, I will state a hypothesis based on observations I have made.  From there, there is only so much measurement and experimentation I can participate in.  I do not have funding or facilities to do that.  What I can do is research to find out who else is talking about these things or what evidence there is, out there on the internet, to support the idea.  I can then modify my hypothesis based on new evidence.  That is essentially the Scientific Method.

The other thing that is part of a scientific process is Peer Review.  The reason people say things like, "Global Climate Change is clearly man-made because every scientist in the world agrees on it," is not because a "fake news" source said so but because the information is put out there for every scientist in the world to refute.  The authors of these studies encourage other qualified individuals in their fields to try to debunk their findings.  If others are unable to debunk the findings and moreover, if experiments which prove the findings, can be repeated by others then the debate is over and literally every credible scientist in the world agrees with the findings.

That is not to say that sometimes Science cannot change its mind.  That is the beauty of using the Scientific Method.  Over time, new evidence can present itself and then everyone who is qualified to act on that evidence will try to make sense of it.  But it is safe to say that once an idea takes root, like the Earth is round, for example, that once this is proven it probably will not change.

With that, I will wrap up today's post saying that I have a lot of research to do on the idea that perhaps Man was planted here by aliens.  Bear in mind that this is not something I have a strong belief in - more likely we are part of a long chain of terrestrial evolution.  But it is an idea I would like to explore in more detail.

This is taking me down a rabbit hole of Paleontology.  Last week it was Physics.  The week before it was something else, etc.  My professional expertise is in Business and Communication.  Nonetheless, I will continue to exercise logic and reason in my posts and I encourage others to challenge my ideas and my findings.

We are Stardust

Last week I introduced my readers to the concept of Panspermia, the Origin of Life Biology hypothesis that the building blocks of life exist throughout the Universe.  This could be in the form of bacteria or in aminos which make up DNA.  Some scientists even postulate that larger, complex lifeforms like humans could be seeded around the Universe.

Is this how life formed on Earth?  Let's suppose, for argument's sake, that it was.  How would it have arrived here?  A few possibilities that have been batted around are:

  • Naturally
  • Via clouds of cosmic dust or attached to meteors

Abiogenesis via Hydrothermal Vents

In the 1970's, scientists discovered life in the deepest, darkest parts of the ocean where it had previously been thought to be impossible to survive.  These depths are so far beneath the surface of the ocean that no sunlight penetrates.  There, it was observed that microorganisms were able to live near volcanic vents in the floor of the ocean.  These hydrothermal vents heat underground water which then bubbles out into the ocean.  Most lifeforms, including humans, would be injured or even killed by coming into contact with this super-heated water.  But some lifeforms could not only withstand being in this harsh environment, they thrived in it.

The lifeforms that were found near these volcanic vents are thought to have formed through abiogenesis.  This is the widely accepted process where non-living entities gradually transform into living entities over long periods of time.  Eventually, these simple lifeforms will then evolve into more complex lifeforms, over millions of years.

It is possible that this is how life on Earth was initially created.  If so, it is possible that these conditions exist elsewhere in the Universe.  Not only is this possible but it is highly likely.  There are up to 19,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 Earth-like planets in the known Universe.  If even a small fraction of these planets are capable of sustaining simple lifeforms, like those near Earth's hydrothermal vents, then there should be some type of life on billions of planets.

We are Stardust

The Cosmic Dust concept of Panspermia states that these same building blocks of life exist in clouds of dust and gas which have been observed in space.  It is possible that this dust came into contact with our planet at the same time it was being formed or shortly afterwards.  Some scientist believe this is still going on.  They link the discovery of new viruses like SARS, and HIV to these extra-terrestrial sources.

Similarly, many scientists believe that it is possible for some microorganisms to survive long flights through space, trapped inside meteors or within comets.  Research has been conducted, and is ongoing, to test this at the International Space Station (ISS) and other facilities.  It is possible that life on Earth began after a meteor collided with the planet.

Origin of life biology

If some form of life can exist in the harsh conditions of space, it is possible that it could have been carried here, clinging to the exterior of alien spaceships.  Astronauts at the ISS have found DNA on the outside of the Space Station.  Where did it come from?  If it can exist there, it can exist on the outside of alien spaceships.

An even more likely possibility is that some form of life was carried here inside alien spaceships.  When Europeans first came in contact with Native Americans, they brought with them European diseases.  Perhaps aliens carry alien diseases with them, when they visit.  Perhaps this happened millions or even billions of years ago and this was what seeded Earth with life.

If that is the case, it is possible that aliens have planted more complex lifeforms, like humans, here.  More on that in a future post.

Panspermia vs Abiogenesis

So the question remains, Panspermia vs Abiogenesis, which is it?  Like Forrest Gump says, "Maybe it's both.  Maybe both are happening at the same time."
